Ayurvedic Treatment of Lipoma - [no surgery needed]

What is Lipoma

A lump of fat, also known as lipoma in English, is a growth of fatty tissue (tissue) that develops slowly under your skin. These lumps are usually painless and are often found on the upper body, shoulders, arms, hips, and upper thighs. Sometimes these tumors are also found in the deep tissue of the thigh, shoulder, or calf. These are the most common tumors occurring under your skin, which occur in any one of a thousand people. Although lipoma can occur to anyone of any age, it rarely occurs in children. The lump of fat only hurts when it travels to the veins under the skin.

The lipoma is also called as "Koluppu Katti" in Tamil, "Ganth" in Hindi.
Other names of Lipoma: Adipose tumor, benign fat tumor, 脂瘤, 脂瘤, liˈpōmə, ليبوما, ലിപ്പോമ, липома, Lipome, ਲਿਪੋਮਾ, కొవ్వుకణితి.

Types of Lipoma

The many subtypes of lipomas include:

  1. Adenolipomas are lipomas associated with eccrine sweat glands.
  2. Angiolipoleiomyomas are acquired, solitary, asymptomatic acral nodules, characterized histologically by well-circumscribed subcutaneous tumors composed of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, connective tissue, and fat.
  3. Angiolipomas are painful subcutaneous nodules having all other features of a typical lipoma.
  4. Cerebellar pontine angle and internal auditory canal lipomas
  5. Chondroid lipomas are deep-seated, firm, yellow tumors that characteristically occur on the legs of women.
  6. Corpus callosum lipoma is a rare congenital brain condition that may or may not present with symptoms. This occurs in the corpus callosum, also known as the colossal commissure, which is a wide, flat bundle of neural fibers beneath the cortex in the human brain.
  7. Hibernomas are lipomas of brown fat.
  8. Intradermal spindle cell lipomas are distinct in that they most commonly affect women and have a wide distribution, occurring with relatively equal frequency on the head and neck, trunk, and upper and lower extremities.
  9. fibro lipoma is a lipoma with focal areas of large amounts of fibrous tissue. A sclerotic lipoma is a predominantly fibrous lesion with focal areas of fat.
  10. Neural fibro lipomas are overgrowths of fibro-fatty tissue along a nerve trunk, which often leads to nerve compression.
  11. Pleomorphic lipomas, like spindle-cell lipomas, occur for the most part on the backs and necks of elderly men and are characterized by floret giant cells with overlapping nuclei.
  12. Spindle-cell lipomas are asymptomatic, slow-growing, subcutaneous tumors that have a predilection for the posterior back, neck, and shoulders of older men.
  13. Superficial subcutaneous lipomas, the most common type of lipoma, lie just below the surface of the skin. Most occur on the trunkthigh, and forearm, although they may be found anywhere in the body where fat is located.

Lipoma Symptoms

Lipoma usually appears as a small, soft lump. These knots are usually less than 2 inches wide. Sometimes, the knots may be more than one. These knots can be moved from outside to rest. Lipomas usually do not hurt, although some subtypes of this may be painful, such as angiolipoma. Fat knuckles usually:

  1. The lump of fat may be yellow.
  2. The lump fat can be colorless.
  3. The lump of fat grows slowly.
  4. The lump of fat is soft on touching.
  5. The lump of fat can be easily shaken with the finger.
  6. The lump of fat is slightly under the skin.

Lipoma Causes

The cause of fat lumps is not fully understood. These occur from generation to generation in most families, so genetic factors have an important role in their development. Lumps of fat often appear after an injury, although doctors do not know if it is caused by the injury. Some people who suffer from a rare disease like Madelung's disease are at greater risk of getting lipoma. If you have a history of lipoma in your family, you also have an increased risk of developing fat lumps. This disease is most commonly found in the middle age between 40 and 60 years of age.

The following diseases may also increase the risk of lipoma:

  1. Adiposis dolorosa (a rare disorder characterized by more than one and sore lumps)
  2. Choden syndrome
  3. Gardner syndrome
  4. Medlang's disease
  5. Being 40 to 60 years of age, although lipoma can occur at any age, it is the most common in this age group
  6. Lipoma can also come from your parents - Genetic Factors
  7. Persons who drink alcohol

When to see a doctor?

If you experience any change in your skin, see a doctor immediately. The lump of fat may also resemble a cancerous condition called liposarcoma.

If you notice any lumps or swelling on your body, then you should get it checked by a doctor. Doctors examine whether this lipoma is harmless or require some further tests.

The doctor may ask you the following questions:

  1. When did you see your knot?
  2. Has that lump already increased?
  3. Is there pain in that lump?
  4. Do others in your family also have problems with fat lumps?
  5. Have you had a problem of fat lumps before?

In some rare cases, fat lumps may also form in the muscles or internal organs. If the lump of fat hurts or affects the muscles, it may need to be removed.

But even if you ever see a lump or swelling anywhere on your body, do see your doctor. In very rare cases, the lump can be a type of cancer called liposarcoma, which grows very rapidly. If the doctor suspects this, he will ask for a test.

Lipoma Complications

The lipoma is a cancer-free lump. This means that there is no possibility of spreading in its body. It does not spread through the muscle or surrounding tissue and is not fatal.

Diagnosis of Lipoma

Doctors can often detect a lump of fat by physical examination. It feels soft on touch and does not hurt. Being made of fatty tissue, the lump of fat can be easily shaken upon touching.

The lump of fat is tested by the following test:

  1. Physical examination
  2. Biopsy
  3. X-rays or other imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan if the lump is large, abnormal or extremely deep.
  4. CT scan - This scan is more detailed than X-ray rays and if there is a presence of lipoma in the body, a fatty mass appears in the test.
  5. MRI scan - MRI scan gives the best information to test lipoma. In this test, better images of soft tissue such as fat lumps can be seen. The MRI test presents images of fatty mass from all perspectives. Often, doctors test lipomas based on MRI imaging alone, which does not require biopsy.

People with lipoma do not have any particular fear of liposarcoma going forward. However, people with atypical lipomas are the exception. This subtype of lipoma can turn into liposarcoma cancer, but it is very rare.
